Games Launchpad – Brickit
Programs

Games Launchpad

50–60 minute recycling/SDG activations you can run online or at a facility tour. Each scenario includes a quick pre-quiz, scan-to-build playbook, facilitator script, and reflection checklist.

Launch flow for partners

Each activation follows a predictable sequence: baseline quiz → hands-on game → “Scan & Build” moment → reflection + progress sheet. Use it for facility tours, family nights, or staff trainings.

1. Baseline quiz

Ask 3 quick questions (e.g., “Which items can go loose in the bin?”, “Why bags hurt the sorter?”, “What happens to a contaminated load?”). Capture answers on paper/tablet.

2. Playbook

Assign roles, run the Brickit cycle, log contamination, and test substitutions. Each playbook includes facilitator scripts and time cues.

3. Scan & Build

Use the Brickit App (link or QR) to scan your LEGO pile, choose one model, and build together. Talk about constraints — Brickit sees shape, not color, just like real sorting sensors.

4. Reflection & progress

Teams note how contamination changed, which rule helped most, and one action they’ll share with their community. Leave a progress sheet for later reporting.

Launch scenarios

Each scenario below is fully scripted: materials, roles, timing, questions, and success metrics. Pick one, share the playbook with facilitators, and run it with 15–35 participants.

Contamination Busters

20–30 min

Sort two rounds, improve rules, and reduce contamination. Ideal for quick demos and volunteer orientations.

Materials & setup
  • 24–30 cards (paper, plastic, metal, glass, tanglers, trash)
  • 4 labelled zones, simple scoreboard
  • Brickit App device per team (optional)
Steps
  1. Explain Recycling Basics (bottles/cans/paper, empty & dry, no bags).
  2. Round 1 — sort blind.
  3. Decide on 3 rules + build a LEGO reminder.
  4. Round 2 — repeat, log contamination %.
  5. Share results + reflection questions.
Reflection questions
  • Which rule cut contamination the most?
  • What will you change at your drop-off point?
  • Is there one special item that always needs separate handling?

Bin-to-Bale Relay

35–45 min

Model the recycling chain, identify bottlenecks, and adapt the process for higher throughput.

Materials & setup
  • 4 zones: bin → truck → sorting → bale
  • Stream cards with contaminants and special handling cues
  • Clock/timer, scoreboards for recovered vs rejected
Steps
  1. Assign stations, sort LEGO by role (paper, plastic, glass, special).
  2. Build a LEGO “process” with gates and quality checks.
  3. Run Relay Round 1, note errors.
  4. Adjust system (add checks, re-route tanglers).
  5. Run Relay Round 2 and debrief.
Reflection prompts
  • Where did contamination slip through?
  • How would you alert workers about tanglers?
  • What visual cue reminds you to empty, clean, dry?

Zero Waste Mission

40–60 min

Design, measure, and redesign a product with fewer materials. Emphasize reduce ↝ reuse ↝ recycle.

Materials & setup
  • One prompt to design for (e.g., lunchbox, reusable bottle carrier, bike rack, package protector)
  • Brickit App for scan baseline
  • Score sheet for pieces/no. of substitutions
Steps
  1. Sort and scan to understand inventory.
  2. Build initial version with full functionality.
  3. Measure piece count & functional goals.
  4. Redesign with fewer pieces and document trade-offs.
  5. Pitch the “zero waste decision”.
Reflection prompts
  • How did you reduce materials without losing function?
  • Which reusable parts could be borrowed from another build?
  • What would you tell a family about reduce/reuse?

Scan, Build, & Share

Every scenario pairs with Brickit App scanning. After sorting, scan the pile, choose a model, and build while narrating your decisions. Share photos/results through the app or a reflection sheet.

Track progress

Leave a progress sheet or digital log so you can show WM/partners that contamination dropped, rules were adopted, and awareness improved.

Scorecard

Record baseline quiz + post-game answers, contamination % before/after, and rule recall.

Reflection

Capture one action per team (“We will always empty lids”) and one story (“We taught our neighbor”).

Progress sheet

Use a simple template: contamination before/after, the 3 rules, one action, and a QR/link to photos.
